How to Erase a Burnt CD

It is possible to erase a burnt CD, provided the CD is a CD-RW and not merely a CD-R. A CD-RW stands for a "rewritable" CD. This means you can erase the data and burn new data onto the CD. A CD-R stands for a "recordable" CD. This means you can record data onto the CD once and you can never erase the data.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the CD drive and place the CD-RW into the drive. Close the drive.

    • 2

Open the CD drive on the computer by right clicking the drive within "My Computer." View the "CD Writing Tasks" window.

    • 3

Find the "Erase this CD-RW" option and select it. Click "Next."

    • 4

View the progress bar as the CD-RW erases on your computer.

    • 5

Eject the CD when it is finished erasing or burn new data to the CD-RW.
