Memory bandwidth has an impact on the performance of your computer. That impact is dependent on the type of software you are running. Video editing, file compression and some games can see differences of three to seven percent between a normal RAM and a high bandwidth RAM. Your memory bandwidth is also important to know if you want to add RAM to your computer, as fast RAM will throttle down to the speed of the slowest RAM in your computer.
Things You'll Need
- Internet acess
Open your web browser and navigate to www.cpuid.com. From this page you will be prompted to download the latest version of CPU-Z to your computer. Double click on the file you just downloaded and follow the on-screen instructions to install the software.
Once the installation is complete, click on the “Start” menu in the lower left corner of your screen and select the CPU-Z icon.
Go to the “Memory” tab and locate the "DRAM Frequency" and the “Channel #”. If the Channel # is dual, multiply the DRAM Frequency by 16 to calculate the bandwidth in megabytes per seconds. If the Channel # is single, multiply the DRAM Frequency by 8. If it is triple, multiply by 24.
Mac Os X
Click on the “Apple” menu in the upper left corner of your screen. Select “About This MAC.”
Click on “More Info” in the new window.
Select “Memory” in the left pane of the new window. On the right window locate the “Speed” line. Take that number and multiply it by 8 to calculate the memory bandwidth in megabytes per second for one memory stick. If you have two or four memory sticks, multiply the bandwidth by 2 to get the total memory bandwidth. Multiply it by 3 if you have three or six memory sticks.
