Your QuickBooks data files may be saved in several locations on your hard drive. Depending on your operating system, your version of QuickBooks and the installation settings you determined when you installed the application, the file directory varies. You can search the most common locations or perform a full search of your hard drive based on the standard file extension to locate the QuickBooks data files, which have a QBW extension. With a few minutes' time and a couple of mouse clicks, you can locate all of the company files attached to your QuickBooks installation.
Right-click your “Start” button on the Windows task bar, then click “Explore.” Navigate to your computer’s hard drive.
Locate and double-click the “Users” directory, double-click “Public” and then “Documents.” Find the “Intuit” directory and double-click it. Locate and double-click the “QuickBooks” folder, and then open the “Company Files” directory. Look for your QBW file in this directory. If you are using Windows XP, skip this step.
Locate and double-click the “Documents and Settings” directory. Double-click “All Users,” then “Shared Documents.” Locate and double-click “Intuit.” Double-click “QuickBooks” and then open the “Company Files” directory. Look for your QBW file in this directory.
Right-click the “Start” button on your task bar, then highlight and click “Search.” In the box labeled “All or part of the file name” enter "*.qbw" and click “Search.” Your QuickBooks file should appear in the results window.
