How to Hook Up Computer Printers
Installing a printer on your computer system is a beneficial tool that will allow you to print documents, Internet websites or pictures of loved ones. Printers come in handy when writing school projects or when you need to have information handy when off your computer. Hooking up a printer to your computer is a simple task as long as you follow the correct procedure.

Power down the computer. Properly shut it down clicking "Start" then "Shut Down." This will avoid any electrical shock that may occur while hooking up your printer.

Determine if the printer is equipped with a parallel port or a USB port. A parallel port is a long rectangular port with pins inside of it. A USB port is a small rectangular port with no pins inside of it.

Connect the cable to the back of the computer in the appropriate spot. The parallel port will be near the monitor connection, while the USB port can generally be found toward the bottom of the computer. Connect the other end of the cable to the appropriate spot on the printer.

Plug the power cord into a surge protector or wall outlet. Press the "On" button on the printer and then turn on your computer.

Once the computer boots up, insert the printer CD into the disc drive. Follow the on-screen instructions to install your printer's drivers and software. Once this step is complete, you are ready to print.
