How to Import a Frame in Photoshop

Adobe Photoshop is a powerful graphics program that is used for a broad array of purposes, from webpage design and animation to designing ads and editing photos. It is also often used to create special effects for videos or to create posters for movies based on a single frame of the movie. With other programs you might have to use a separate video editing package to extract the video frame or frames you want to work with. But Photoshop has the ability to directly import video as layers.

Instructions

    • 1

Load the video file you want to work with onto your computer. It needs to be in a format that Photoshop recognizes, such as MOV or AVI.

    • 2

Close any other programs you might be running, since--depending on the number of frames you import and your system--this process might be memory intensive.

    • 3

Open Photoshop. Select "File," then "Import" and click "Video Frames to Layers." In the dialog box that pops up, browse to the video file you loaded and select it. Click "Load."

    • 4

A new dialog will open with a small preview of the video. If you want to import all the frames in the video, click on "From Beginning to End." If you want to select only one or a range, click on "Selected Range Only."

Use the slider controls to select the range by holding down the shift key. You can elect to limit the number of frames by selecting "Limit to Every" and entering a number of frames. Click "OK," and your frames will be loaded into the program as layers.
