How to Sanitize RV Tanks

Self-contained campers and RVs typically have three tanks---a black-water holding tank, a gray-water holding tank and a freshwater tank. Routine maintenance can prevent costly repairs. Holding tanks that are not adequately maintained can allow solid waste to build up, which can create blockage and lead to system failure. A freshwater tank that is not regularly sanitized can allow the growth of bacteria and cause water pump failure. Proper maintenance and sanitization will prevent odor, extend the life of the holding tanks and ensure that your freshwater tank can deliver clean drinking water.

Instructions

  1. Sanitizing the Freshwater Tank

    • 1

Determine the capacity of your freshwater tank. Dilute a quarter-cup of household bleach in a gallon of water. This solution will treat 15 gallons.

    • 2

Turn off all the faucets and close all drain valves. Open the freshwater tank fill spout and pour the bleach solution into the tank. Use a potable water hose to fill the tank with fresh water.

    • 3

Switch the water pump to the "On" position and turn on all the faucets inside the RV to remove air from the lines. Once you receive a steady stream of water, turn the faucet off. Do not be alarmed by the smell of chlorine.

    • 4

Refill the tank and allow it to sit for three hours.

    • 5

Open all faucets, valves and plumbing line drains and drain the entire plumbing system. Refill the freshwater tank with clean water. Allow water to run for several minutes to flush the system.

    • 6

Turn off all faucets and close the drain and tank valves. The freshwater tank is now sanitized and ready for use.

Sanitizing the Black- and Gray-Water Holding Tanks

    • 7

Drain and rinse the black-water tank. Close the valve and add several gallons of water into the bottom of the tank to help loosen any solid waste remaining in the tank. Flush the recommended amount of tank maintenance solution down the toilet and into the tank.

    • 8

Drain the gray-water tank. Close the valve and pour a small amount of a chemical solution into the sink drain. You can purchase a variety of chemical solutions designed to maintain your tanks. Avoid solutions that contain formaldehyde.

    • 9

Avoid using toilet tissue that is not specifically designed for use in an RV. Routine use of tank cleaners and deodorizers will aid in breaking down solid waste and prevent odor. Never pour grease or food particles down the drains in an RV.
