How to Make Butterscotch Taffy

Butterscotch taffy is an old-fashioned favorite. In bygone eras, people would gather during the winter for taffy-pulling parties, where they would visit and enjoy the process of making, pulling and eating butterscotch taffy. Things You'll Need

  • 4 tbsp. cornstarch
  • 2 cups brown sugar
  • 4 tbsp. butter
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • ½ cup corn syrup
  • 1½ cups water
  • 2 tsp. vanilla
  • 2-quart saucepan
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Wooden spoon
  • Stove top
  • Instant read thermometer
  • 2-quart square baking pan
  • Kitchen shears
  • Waxed paper
  • Plastic sealing container

      Pour the cornstarch and brown sugar into the saucepan. Add the butter, corn syrup, salt and water to the saucepan. Mix the ingredients well.

      Set your stove's burner to medium and stir the ingredients constantly. Place the thermometer into the pan and simmer the ingredients until the temperature measures 275 degrees Fahrenheit.

      Remove the saucepan from the heat and add the vanilla. Stir well to incorporate.

      Pour the hot ingredients into the baking pan and allow the taffy to cool until you can handle it comfortably.

      Grease your hands with butter or oil and remove the taffy from the pan. Pull the taffy between two people until it is no longer shiny and becomes stiff.

      Form the taffy into ropes with a 1-inch diameter. Cut the ropes into 1-inch portions with kitchen shears.

      Wrap each piece in wax paper and store it at room temperature in a sealed container. The taffy will keep for approximately six weeks.
