How to Tailgate at LP Field

Football, food and fun are the elements that make tailgating at LP Field in Nashville so special for Tennessee Titans fans. Though tailgating is a prominent activity at most NFL games across the country, Nashville football fans have established traditions that they enjoy upholding year after year, such as choosing food to cook based on the opposing team. Playing games, hanging out with friends and meeting new people are also part of the Titans parking lot revelry.

  • Do all your preparations the night before the game. As of 2014, most Titans' Sunday home games take place at 1 p.m. (Eastern Time) and if you are going to get there to tailgate you will want to get there by 10 a.m., which is when the LP Field parking lots open up. Get to your parking space, take out your grill and start cooking right away. Marinate your meat and get your vegetables cut up the night before so you will be ready when you get there.

  • Take out your chairs for you and your guests to get comfortable as you cook. The Titans send you to designated areas of the parking lot for tailgating so you can cook, eat and enjoy your meal. You will be in an area where there will be other tailgaters, so the best attitude to have is the more the merrier. Share your barbecue with others and they will share with you. LP Field is known for its block party atmosphere as the tailgaters there share and compare recipes in a much more open manner than many other fields.

  • Get in the Titans spirit when you go to LP Field when it comes to preparing your pregame barbecue. When the Titans play the Bills, fans are encouraged to grill Buffalo meat. When they play the Dolphins, they don't bring Dolphin meat but they do grill catfish. If the Colts are playing, it's all about the steak. This is unique to Titans home games. Other teams may have copied this idea but the Titans fans were among the first to do it.

  • Do not bring your football and start throwing it around the parking lot. The Titans will not let you throw footballs in the parking lot for safety reasons. There are a number of games that are allowed, including Baggo, Pub Washers, Washeroos and Sholf. The last game is a combination of golf and shuffleboard, while Pub Washers and Washeroos involve bouncing rubber washers into a series of holes on a mat.

  • Register as a designated driver with the Titans. While many fans enjoy engaging in a few pregame libations and may continue to indulge during the game, the Titans encourage responsible tailgating and partying by having drivers who pledge not to drink before or during the game to get free soft drinks. The soft drinks are given throughout the game but you will have to bring your own soft drinks for pregame activities.

  • Request a canopy from the Titans if you are bringing a group of 30 or more to LP Field for the game. The weather in Nashville can get exceptionally hot in August and September and you will want a canopy to shade you from the sun. You can request one in writing if you know you have a big group and have been a season-ticket holder for more than one year.

  • Clean up after your pregame tailgate party. Dump your charcoals in designated cans and throw out all garbage. The Titans ask you to leave the LP Field parking lot in the same way you found it before you got there.
