How to Color Place Mats
If you are throwing a dinner party or an event where children will be present, consider providing them with color-in place mats at their table settings. A children's table is an ideal place to set out blank place mats or color-by-number place mats and a basket of crayons. The coloring project will keep them occupied while the adult guests chat and linger over the meal.

1
Gather a wide variety of crayon colors and place them in a basket. Consider washable in case a child marks on your table. Consider large crayons if you have small guests. Place the basket in the center of the children's dinner table.

2
Place a color-by-number place mat or a blank place mat at each table setting. You can print these online. Or, you can buy blank ones from a party supply store.

Tell the children about this art project once they are seated. Use the color key on the bottom of the place mat and color in the section of the place mat that corresponds to the number. If you are using a paper doll place mat, then tell them it does not matter if they color outside of the lines. Later, you will be cutting out the paper doll and the clothes, so marks outside of the borders will not matter. If you are using a blank place mat, tell them to be creative and draw whatever they would like--or, consider giving them a question to explore. For example, ask them: "What do you want to be when you grow up? Draw that." or "What is your favorite color? Draw as many things as you can think of that are that color."
