How to Configure a Computer's Memory Settings

Windows 7 is an operating system that supports virtual memory. If your computer runs out of physical memory, Windows 7 uses virtual memory to avoid applications from crashing or malfunctioning. You can configure your computer's virtual memory settings from the Performance Options dialog box. You can either manually set the amount of virtual memory or allow Windows 7 to determine the amount needed automatically.

      Click the "Start" button, and type "Advanced System Settings" (without quotes). Press "Enter."

      Choose the "Advanced" tab and then select "Settings" under the "Performance" zone.

      Click the radio button next to "System Managed Size" if you want Windows 7 to automatically manage the virtual memory.

      Press the radio button next to "No Paging File" if you do not want Windows 7 to use virtual memory.

      Click the radio button next to "Custom Size" to manually set virtual memory. Enter the required amounts in megabytes into the "Initial Size" and "Maximums Size" boxes.

      Choose "OK" and then "Apply" to save any changes. Click "Restart Now" if prompted to restart your computer.
