Rinse your mouth with an antiseptic mouth wash at least once a day. Antiseptic mouth wash kills the bacteria that cause plaque build up on your teeth which in turn can lead to the development of gingivitis. Any antiseptic mouth wash found at your local pharmacy or grocery store will get the job done.

Floss your teeth daily. Flossing plays an extremely important role in preventing gingivitis. Flossing removes bacteria from in between your teeth that can lead to gingivitis down the road.

Brush your teeth frequently. Most dentists recommend brushing your teeth at least twice a day. Even better, brush your teeth after every meal. Regular brushing will clean your mouth and teeth of gingivitis causing plaque and tartar build up. Use a soft bristle tooth brush and make sure to replace it every 2 months or when the bristles start to bow.

Brush your tongue. Many people overlook their tongue when it comes to brushing their teeth. However, your tongue is a perfect breeding ground for bacteria. Simply brushing your tongue along with your teeth can greatly reduce the amount of bacteria in your mouth.

Get your teeth professionally cleaned at least once a year. A visit to the dentist for routine cleaning will eliminate hard to remove tartar and can diagnose any minor gum problems before they develop into something more serious.
