How to Remove Skunk Spray Stains

Skunks don't just leave a horrible odor when they spray, they can also leave stains in clothing, furniture or carpeting. Many different kinds of pet-stain and odor-removal treatments are available in pet stores and online. Try to purchase a food-grade stain remover with natural ingredients that can both eliminate the stain and the skunk-spray odor. Because different treatments can require a variety of application instructions, be sure to read the label carefully before applying the stain remover. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Blot the sprayed area with dry paper towels or a dry old rag. Try to soak up and remove as much of the skunk spray as possible.

    • 2

Prepare the skunk-spray removal treatment according to the directions on the label. Some treatments require you to dilute the chemical in water before applying it, while other treatments come in ready-to-use spray applicators.

    • 3

Apply the treatment chemical to the stained area, covering the area thoroughly. If you're treating a stain on furniture or carpeting, be sure to apply the treatment to the area around the stain as well, because liquid-based stains can spread up to six times larger below the carpet or cushion surface.

    • 4

Rub the spray treatment gently into the fibers. Allow the treatment chemical to sit on the stain until it's completely dry. If the skunk-spray stain remains, perform another treatment.

    • 5

Wait at least 24 hours after the area dries before washing if the stain was on clothing, curtains or other cloth. If the stain was on carpeting or furniture, do not shampoo or wash the surface for at least 48 hours after using the skunk-spray stain remover.

Tips & Warnings

  • Wear latex gloves while handling skunk spray-stained materials and cleaning chemicals. If you get any chemicals on your skin, wash with soap and hot water immediately.

  • When you're using the spray treatment on fabric, read the label to ensure that the treatment is safe for the kind of fabric that's stained. You should test a small area first to see whether the treatment damages or changes the color of the fabric.

  • Don't shampoo or launder the stained area before treating it with the stain-removing chemical. Most treatments work best when the stained soft surface or clothing has not been washed yet.
