How to Buy Used Camera Lenses

Lenses help you get the most value from your digital or single-lens reflex, or SLR, camera by offering greater flexibility in shooting. With a longer lens, you can shoot from farther away, improving wildlife or birding images. However, when you're buying a used lens, any imperfection can mean scratches on every image you take. You want to buy from a trusted source, ideally a source you know or is recommended by someone you know.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine what type of lens you want to buy. You'll clearly need a lens that is your make and model of camera, but you should be able to verify on the manufacturer's website whether the lens and camera body are compatible. Consider the type of pictures you'll be shooting. Close-ups and nighttime shots require a different lens. The magazine Outdoor Photographer offers lens reviews; research your needs and list lenses that appeal to you.

    • 2

Determine the value of the lenses when they're sold new, using an online marketplace or your camera company's catalog. You'll only know if you are getting a good bargain if you know the retail cost.

    • 3

Ask friends to recommend used lens dealers. Some camera shops in your community may either sell lenses or recommend someone in your area. The advantage to buying in-person over buying online is you can test the product and examine it for flaws.

    • 4

Call any shops to see whether they have lenses similar to those you're seeking. Ask the sales person to set it aside if the shop has a lens that might be of interest. Look in online marketplaces if you come up empty at shops.

    • 5

Visit the camera supply shops to view the lens. Bring your camera, a soft cloth, a magnifying glass and a pen light.

    • 6

Inspect the lens for cracks, dirt or damages using the magnifying glass and light. Wipe the lens with your soft cloth. If you find it damage-free, attach it to your camera. Look through the lens and take several image shots. If you are happy with the lens performance and you can afford the price, buy it.

    • 7

Continue looking if you are not happy. If you need to buy from an online seller, research the seller's reputation within the marketplace and in online photography forums. Avoid sellers without return policies and positive feedback.
