How to Draw a Web Site Map
When redesigning a website, you need to take a look at the information architecture. You can map this out on paper or with a charting software program like Omnigraffle. Here are some general instructions for drawing out a website map.

Start with the top level, the homepage. Draw a box at the top of your page and inside the box write "Home" or "Index."

Draw the second-level pages on the second tier of your chart. Draw a box for each page that is accessible through the homepage. Write the name of each of those pages inside their respective boxes. These are typically things like "About Us," "Contact Us" and similar but could include anything, depending on the site.

Connect the "Home" box with each of the second-level boxes with lines. You can also connect all of the second-level boxes to one another with horizontal lines if they are accessible to one another on the website.

On the third tier of your chart, draw boxes for any pages that are accessible only through a second-level page and not through the homepage. Connect it to the second-level box(es) that it corresponds to with lines.

Continue this process until you have progressed through all levels of the site. Some websites will only have two levels, while others could be many layers deep.
