How to Use a Starrett No. 436 1-Inch Micrometer
A micrometer is a precision measuring device, used widely in the machining industry, that uses a fixed side as well as a moving spindle to measure dimensions of parts for accuracy. By first making sure the micrometer is calibrated, you can easily measure a part or object that is less than one inch. The Starrett No. 436 micrometer will give you an accurate measurement within a thousandth (.001) of an inch.

Close the micrometer all the way by turning the thimble clockwise until the moving spindle touches the other end. The reading should indicate zero. To ensure repeatability of measurements and accuracy, turn the thimble counter-clockwise about a half of a turn, then back to zero a few times. It should always return to zero when this action is taken.

Open the Starrett micrometer more then the assumed size of the part or object to be measured. As this object or area must fit into this space to be measured, it is wise to open the micrometer enough to freely slide the part or object in the gap. If the object does not fit properly when the micrometer is fully opened, it is larger than one inch and you must use a larger micrometer. If you are measuring a certain area of a part other than the largest area, locate the two best flat surfaces to attain this measurement; it is difficult to measure cylinder and non-flat areas with this particular micrometer.

Position the two sides of the area to be measured between the two edges of the micrometer. Touch one side of the object to the anvil side, which is stationary, and slowly rotate the thimble until the thimble edge touches the other side to be measured. Do not push the spindle too hard against that side as it may cause the micrometer to become inaccurate over time.

Read the measurement on the thimble. First calculate the reading on the sleeve, noted in hundred-thousandths. Next, look at the reading on the thimble. The mark where it is perfectly lined up will give you the rest of the reading. Starrett micrometers are graduated in .025-inch increments on the sleeve and .001-inch increments on the thimble. So, if the reading is just past the larger 2 notch on the sleeve and just past the 1 on the thimble, your reading would be .201 inch.
