1. Request to spend an hour or two at each after school program you're considering, so you can get a feel for how each program operates.

2. Speak with the staff and counselors at the various programs, to ensure they are responsible adults. Ask to see the qualifications and certifications of the staff involved with the programs.

3. Observe the facility where the programs are held, to make sure they are clean, well taken care of and there are no obvious safety hazards.

4. Ask for a list of snacks or meals that are provided to the children, to ensure they are nutritionally sound.

5. Ask the staff what resources are available to the children, like a library, media space or outdoor athletic equipment. Make sure these resources are up to your standards.

6. Observe the activities the children take part in to ensure they are educational and engaging, and are activities your child would enjoy participating in.
