How to Become an ASE Certified Automotive Technician

Automotive technicians who wear the blue-and-white ASE insignia are certified by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence. They carry credentials to prove their expertise. Becoming ASE certified is extremely important in today's challenging economy where there is very fierce competition for jobs. Anything that you do to make yourself more marketable may help you to land a job. Being ASE certified adds credibility and integrity to your skills, and proves that you are competent to carry out the tasks assigned to you by your employer.

Instructions

    • 1

Enroll in automotive classes at your local community college to gain or increase your knowledge and experience with vehicles.

    • 2

Sign up for ASE testing when you feel confident in your knowledge of automotive technology. There are a total of eight ASE tests, including Engine Repair, Automatic Transmission/Transaxle, Manual Drive Train/Axle, Steering and Suspension, Brakes, Electrical Systems, Heating and A/C, and Engine Performance. To become ASE certified, you only need to pass one of these tests. To achieve ASE master certification, you must successfully pass all eight tests.

    • 3

Find an automotive technician job at dealership, independent shop, or tire center. You need two years of automotive experience, in addition to passing one of the tests, to become ASE certified.

    • 4

Send in your application for ASE certification after you fulfill the above requirements (one test passed and two years experience).

Tips & Warnings

  • Several ASE preparation guides are available to help you pass the ASE tests (see Resources).

  • ASE testing isn't free, so don't take the test until you feel comfortable and confident enough to pass it.
