A codec is a computer program that compresses/decompresses digital audio/video data according to a given audio/video file or streaming file format. As Windows Media Player releases new versions and makes upgrades, it is necessary to download and install the latest codecs. This will ensure that your Windows Media Player program functions correctly and is able to play audio and video files without any problems.

  1. Reinstalling Windows Media Player

      Go to the Microsoft website (See Resources) to upgrade to the newest version. Windows Media Player downloads and installs codecs automatically. This is recommended if your system is not running behind a firewall.

      Download the application. Click the "Downloads" option on the left side-menu. Select the player as well as the OS version, then choose a language. Click "Download Now" and select "Save File" to download the .EXE file.

      Exit out of Windows Media Player and other running programs before installing. Double-click on the .EXE file and click "Run." Click "Validate," then accept the terms of service. Choose the initial settings and click "Finish."

    Installing Codecs Through Windows

      Go to the "Control Panel" and select "Add Hardware." Click "Next" to begin the Add Hardware Wizard.

      Click the radio button beside "Yes, I have already connected the hardware" and click "Next."

      Scroll to the bottom of the hardware list and select "Add a new hardware device" then click "Next."

      Click the radio button beside "Search for and install the hardware automatically." Click "Next" and click it once more at the next window.

      Select "Sound, Video, and Game controllers" then click "Next." Choose "Microsoft" from the list of manufacturers. Select the Windows Media Player codecs and click "Next" to begin installation. Restart your computer upon completion.
