How to Install Windows Vista Theme on XP

Windows operating systems have always been relatively easy to customize in many ways, including the overall display, letting users change how every aspect of their operating system looks. Some of these theme changes can be done by the users themselves, or come in pre-made transformation packs that can be applied simply by installing them. It is possible for one operating system to mimic the look of another, and it is possible to install a theme that will let Windows XP appear similar to Windows Vista.

Instructions

    • 1

Download a Windows Vista transformation pack. Some of these may be difficult to locate; one has been provided in the Resources section below. If you choose another site, be cautious about where you download your files from.

    • 2

Extract the executable files if necessary, then start the installation process. Depending on the package, it may create a restore point, may ask what parts of the theme you wish to install, and/or ask for your permission to alter certain files. Note that a theme will not actively modify system files, so if you need to remove it later, it will not make you lose any data or cause any damage.

Restart your computer when the installation process is complete. When your computer restarts, it will usually be running with the new theme automatically, so you should not have to set it yourself. If it does not, right click on a blank part of your desktop and click "Properties," select the "Themes" tab, select your theme from the drop-down menu, then click "OK" and wait a few moments for the changes to take effect.
