How to Paint Sea Oats
Sea oats are a type of grass that grows along beaches and sandy areas. Sea oats are tall with thick stalks, and they produce seeds near the top of their stalks. Sea oats tend to be seen growing together, waving in the wind.

1
Mix a color on your palette that is part green and part yellow, with a small amount of white. You are trying to produce a shade similar to that of dry grass. Mix in a minimal amount of brown as needed. Experiment with the proportions as needed.

2
Use the tip of a small paintbrush or the side of a palette knife to scrape a line for the stalk of grass. The stalk of grass should curve to the side, as if along the curve of a large balloon.

3
Use your paintbrush to make several feathery brushstrokes along the top of the stalk. These brush strokes represent the seeds of the sea oats. The seeds should be short relative to the stalk and clumped together, blowing back in the same direction as the grass stalk.

To create a clump of sea grass, use your palette knife to scrape several curved stalks in a row. Distribute the stalks in a way that is varied and irregular, so that the stalks are of different heights and some appear to be in back of others. To create the appearance of a large plain of sea grass, begin by painting a relatively large flat shape of green where the sea grass will be, then overlay that with a row of individual stalks. Follow directions in steps 1 through 3 to create the individual stalks.
