How to Find the Estimated Gas Mileage of a Vehicle

Vehicle gas mileage is an important part of planning any trip with gas prices as high as they are today. Calculating your vehicle's mileage is relatively easy and can be done with some simple math calculations. Anyone can calculate their own mileage and plan their trips based on what it will cost to get to and from their destination. Considering the price of gas, flying may be cheaper than a long drive.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill your tank with gas and note the number of gallons it takes to fill the car.

    • 2

Set the trip odometer to zero. If your vehicle is not equiped with a trip odometer that can be set to zero, use the actual car mileage to begin your trip and subract that number from the number you have when you get to your destination.

    • 3

Make your trip and stop at the nearest gas station at the end of your trip.

    • 4

Fill the car with gas again and note the number of gallons used.

    • 5

Subtract the gas level, when you started your trip, from the gas level at the end of your trip.

    • 6

Subtract the number of miles you traveled from the gallons used and this will give you your gas mileage.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your vehicle is not equipped with a trip odometer, use the overall car mileage and follow the same procedure.
