1
Clean your cabinets. Over the years a lot of grease particles and dust can cling to your cabinetry, making it look dull and old. Use a sponge and warm soapy water (use dish detergent as a degreaser) to clean the cabinets. Apply a wood furniture polish containing orange oil for shine and protection.

Clean or replace the hardware. If the hardware on your cabinets is in good shape but dirty, remove the hardware, hinges as well as handles, and soak them in warm soapy water. Use a degreasing soap, such as dishwashing liquid, and an old toothbrush to gently scrub them clean. Dry thoroughly before replacing. If the hardware is outdated or in bad shape, give your cabinets an inexpensive fresh look by adding new hardware.

Paint your cabinets. A fresh coat of paint can do wonders for changing the look of your kitchen. Remove all cabinet doors and make sure you use a primer first, since most cabinets are varnished. When choosing paint, buy one that is suitable for a surface that needs to be wiped down frequently. Some home improvement stores have paints that are specifically made for items such as kitchen or bathroom cabinets.

Re-stain your kitchen cabinets. This option is not as time intensive or difficult as refinishing your cabinets, while it still changes the look of the wood. You should look for a gel stain that is darker than your existing cabinet color. Although staining is a relatively simple job, it is important to follow the manufacturer's instructions, because skipping steps can lead to problems.
