How to Convert Schedule B to HS Code

To help improve the speed and efficiency of international trade, the "Harmonized Tariff System" (abbreviated "HS") was developed to provide standard, numerical classifications for commodities. The "Schedule B" numbering system is the HS-based scheme used by the United States to track exported goods. In fact, a product's "Schedule B" number is nothing more than its six-digit HS number with four additional digits on the end.

Instructions

    • 1

Write down the product's 10-digit Schedule B number, including periods.

    • 2

Cross out the four digits to the right of the second period.

    • 3

      Cross out the second period.

    • 4

Add two lowercase x's (i.e. "xx") immediately to the right of the sixth digit, such that "1234.56xx" is the general format of the code. Note: The digits "1234.56" are only used here for illustrative purposes, but the letters "xx" should always appear in the actual HS code.
