How to Clean Chrome Plated Plastic on Your Auto

It used to be that the process of chrome plating required a metal subject, but advances in technology have allowed manufacturers to chrome plate plastic parts as well. This can be found frequently in grilles and small trim pieces. The process for cleaning chrome-plated plastic pieces isn't any different from cleaning normal chrome, and can be done easily at home with basic supplies.

Instructions

    • 1

Park the vehicle in a shaded area. Rinse off the chromed part using the hose to loosen grime and dirt. Pour a cap full of car wash soap into the bucket and fill the bucket with high-pressure water from the hose.

    • 2

Place the microfiber mitt on your hand and dip it in the suds from the soap in the bucket, then wash off the part using the mitt. Rinse off the part using low-pressure water from the hose. Dry it off using a microfiber towel.

    • 3

Spray the part with the glass cleaner. Buff the glass cleaner using a fresh microfiber towel, turning it frequently so that you always have a fresh surface. Make sure you get all the nooks and crannies in the part so that the glass cleaner won't drip on the part once you drive the vehicle.
