How to Convert Gpx to Text
GPX files are supported by nearly all GPS units, and are used as a means of exchanging data between them. GPX files make it possible, for example, for a family to post an itinerary for a vacation online for others to download import into their GPS units, and receive driving directions for. If you are in a situation where you need to make use of a GPX file without a GPS unit, however, you will want to convert the file to plain text for importing into another resource, such as Google Maps. Convert a GPX file to plain text using the GPS Visualizer.
Instructions

1
Browse to the GPS Vizualizer website using the link in Resources. Click the "Browse" button. Locate the GPX file that you would like to convert and double click it.

2
Click the "Plain text" radio button, located next to "Output format."

3
Use the drop-down menu next to "Plain text delimiter" to select whether a tab, comma or other character should be placed between values in the converted text file. If you will be reading the file in a program, such as Wordpad, "tab" is likely to be the best option. Select "comma" if you will be importing the file into a spreadsheet program such as Excel.
-
4
Use the "Plain text output units" drop-down menu to select whether the units in the converted text file should be displayed in U.S., metric or nautical units.
-
5
Click the "Convert" button. You will be taken to a page with a download link. Click the link to download the finished text file. Alternatively, use the large text window below the download link to browse the contents of the file.

Tips & Warnings
The GPS visualizer formats complicated GPX files in a way that makes them easier to read. However, if the GPX file that you need to read is very small, perhaps because it contains only one waypoint, you may find it simpler to double-click the file, and select Notepad when you are asked which program to open it with. GPX files store data in plain text.
