How to Tint Fondant
Fondant is much like an edible clay, used to create decorations that embellish cakes, cookies, candies, cupcakes and other dessert delicacies. Purchase ready-made fondant, or make your own out of shortening, sugar, glycerin and gelatin, then tint it to your liking. Fondant can be tinted nearly any color, including dark colors such as red, black or brown, using special food coloring made of gels or pastes. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Vegetable oil or shortening
- Toothpicks
- Fondant coloring
- Damp cloth or zip-lock bag
Instructions

1
Rub vegetable oil or shortening on your hands, then roll the fondant into a ball. Be sure you have enough fondant for your project, because it will be difficult to match the exact color if you run short.
-
2
Dip a toothpick in fondant coloring and apply dots of coloring to several places on the ball. Use a fresh toothpick each time you dip, because dipping a used toothpick into the fondant coloring will contaminate the coloring in the container. Use dots of two separate colors if you want to blend your own colors. Add the colors a little at a time until you achieve the color you want.

3
Put the fondant ball on a clean surface and knead the fondant until the colors are completely blended, or if you prefer, leave it with a marbled appearance.
-
4
Keep the fondant moist with a damp cloth while you work. If you aren't ready to use the fondant immediately, coat the fondant with shortening and put it in a zip-lock bag.

Tips & Warnings
If you don't like the feeling of shortening or oil on your hands, protect your hands with gloves. Be sure the gloves are constructed of non-toxic, food-safe material.
If you accidentally make the color too intense, knead in a bit of white fondant to tame it down.
