How to Improve After School Programs
After-school programs provide safe havens for kids until their parents get home from work. They engage children in constructive activities, provide mentors and give children a sense of community. An effective after-school program can keep kids from getting into trouble. If your after-school program needs improvement, take time to develop a plan. Changes can produce a more effective after-school program.

1
Establish a set of goals. Determine what you hope to accomplish, how it should look and function, and other necessities.
-
2
Evaluate the current program. Observe the kids and staff in action to determine what works well and what needs improvement.
-
-
3
Hire qualified staff, if necessary. Look for staff members with experience in the education field or with extensive experience working with children.
-
4
Provide training for all staff. Include training on interacting with children, planning activities, handling behavioral problems and other relevant issues. Establish initial training after hiring, but also include training throughout the year as a refresher.
-
5
Develop expectations for the staff and students. Spell out how you expect the staff to act and the responsibilities it carries. Create expectations for student behavior and participation.
-
6
Seek input from the kids and parents. Look for suggestions on improvement through different activities or opportunities.
-
7
Assess activities and schedules. Make sure the program offers activities that include art, homework support, science, physical activity, reading, drama and music. This will give children the chance to explore different areas.
