How to Install Grips on a Motocross Bike

A motocross bike is a motorcycle designed specifically for dirt racing. Many motorcycle manufacturers sell race-ready bikes right off the showroom floor. A typical dirt track will include jumps, banked turns, and any number of obstacles. Hanging on to a motocross bike while maneuvering a dirt course can be a challenge. The grips (or hand grips) mounted at the end of the handlebars provide a place to hang onto. Replacing worn or damaged grips is necessary for your safety and can be done in about one hour.

Instructions

    • 1

Use a sharp utility knife and cut the old grips off of the handlebars. Use a gentle cut to avoid damaging the handlebars. Use extra care on the right hand side of the handlebars since that grip covers the throttle tube, which is made of plastic. Make a small cut at the end of the grip and try peeling it back off of the throttle tube to keep from damaging it.

    • 2

Clean the handlebars and throttle tube with acetone and a clean rag to get the old glue residue off.

    • 3

Apply grip adhesive to the inside of the new grips and to the outside of the handlebars and throttle tube. Avoid getting adhesive into the throttle tube as it may not work smoothly afterward. Apply a piece of tape over the end of the throttle tube if it has a hole in it to keep from getting glue inside.

    • 4

Push the grip onto the handlebar without stopping until you reach the desired position, as the glue will adhere quickly. Push the grip onto the throttle tube in the same fashion.

    • 5

Wrap safety wire around the grips to further ensure they will not come loose while riding. Twist the wire tightly with pliers and cut off the excess, leaving a ¼" tail to be tucked under the wire so it will not get caught on anything. Wrap the grips at each end with wire, not in the center where your hands will be while riding.

Tips & Warnings

  • The right hand grip doubles as the throttle. The throttle assembly, or throttle tube, resides under this grip. By twisting the grip with your hand as you are riding, the motorcycle will speed up or slow down. Use extreme care when changing grips on the throttle tube. If the throttle tube is damaged while changing grips, it will have to be replaced.
