How to Retrieve Deleted Internet Files

Over the course of surfing the Internet, your past downloads and visited pages might become obscured or accidentally deleted. Thankfully, most browsers have some settings that can be configured in order to prevent these occurrences. Browsers make duplicate copies of many files and store them in a designated cache. By accessing your cache, you can recover these files. In addition, many broken or outdated Internet sites are stored in Google's cache, which is also accessible.

Instructions

  1. Your Cache

    • 1

      Open your web browser.

    • 2

Open your web browser's Options menu. In some browsers, this is called 'Preferences'.

    • 3

Find the browser's Offline Storage or Cache options. Make sure you have allowed sufficient space for the storage of backup Internet files.

    • 4

Type "about:cache" in your browser's navigation bar. This will bring up detailed information about the files that have been saved on your computer. From here, you can access them within your browser. If you are using Opera as your browser, type "about:opera" instead. If you are using Internet Explorer, your files will be stored in a folder called "Temporary Internet Files."

    Google's Cache

    • 5

Open your web browser and navigate to the Google homepage.

    • 6

Search for the desired web page.

    • 7

Click on the "Cached" link next to the website address in the search results. This will take you to Google's cached version of the page. This is especially useful for pages which no longer exist at their original location or which are otherwise unviewable.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure you have enough hard drive space to account for your desired cache size.
