How to Upload Coordinates for Google Maps

Google Maps is a powerful website featuring a variety of mapping styles for the entire planet. For free, users can visit any place in the world and view detailed maps of an area. Most parts of the globe allow for satellite images, and many major cities employ a Street View to experience the look of the landscape from ground level. Additionally, the Google Maps service provides driving directions between cities and useful information about the businesses in a certain area. While most users will search for a location based on its address, it is possible to locate a part of the world in Google Maps by using coordinates.

Things You'll Need

  • Web browser
  • Visit the Google Maps website at maps.google.com in any web browser application connected to the Internet. Note that this website address does not use the "www" prefix.

  • Locate the search box at the top of the Google Maps web page. This is the starting point for all location searches and other services provided by Google Maps.

  • Determine the full latitude and longitude coordinates of the desired location. These can be positive or negative numbers and may optionally extend to multiple decimal places.

  • Type the coordinates into the Google Maps search box. Start with the latitude coordinate. Type a comma and then type the longitude coordinate. Optionally, you may import the coordinates from another source by using the copy and paste functions on your computer. This may be easiest for users looking to upload the coordinates without typing.

  • Label the coordinates by typing any text or sentence after the coordinates. This is done prior to making the search.

  • Press the "Search Maps" button. The map will quickly zoom to the location of the coordinates. Any text typed into the Search box will further identify the located area on the map.

  • Save the coordinates in your Google account for later use, if desired. This allows a permanent upload of the coordinates to the Google servers for quick retrieval. Press the "Save To" link on the left sidebar of the map. This feature requires that you are logged into a Google account already. From the drop-down menu, choose the folder for saved locations to which you wish to add these coordinates, or keep the default "My Saved Places" folder. Press the "Save" button.
