How to Configure Azureus to Use a Proxy

If you use Vuze--also known as Azureus--to share files online, you may be wondering what can be done to increase its security. If you use a proxy server when you browse the Web, you may be able to configure Azureus or Vuze to use that same proxy. When you connect through a proxy server, data is sent to the server before reaching you, which can help discourage some types of security concerns such as hacking attempts. Use these options to connect through a proxy using Azureus or Vuze.

  • Launch the Azureus client. Click the "Tools" menu at the top of the screen, then click "Options."

  • Click "Mode" on the left side of the window, and click the "Advanced" radio button.

  • Double click "Connection" on the left side of the window to expand the category, then click "Proxy Options" under it.

  • Click the check box labeled "Enable proxying of tracker communications."

  • Enter the address and port number of the proxy server. If the server is not public, enter your user name and password.

  • Click the check box labeled "I have a SOCKS proxy" if your proxy server uses the SOCKS protocol. This information is available from the provider of the proxy service.

  • Click the check box labeled "Enable proxying of peer communications."

  • Use the drop-down menu next to "SOCKS version" to select the SOCKS version used by your proxy server, then click the check box labeled "Inform tracker of limitation." For peer communication, the proxy server must support SOCKS version 4, 4A or 5.

  • Click the check box labeled "Use same proxy settings for tracker and peer communications" if you are only using one proxy server. If you are using two, remove the check from this box and enter the proxy server address and port number, and your user name and password.

  • Click "Apply," then close and re-start Azureus to save your changes.

Tips & Warnings

  • Configuration details such as the address of the proxy server and your user name and password must be given to you by the administrator of the server. If you know that you have entered the correct configuration data but are unable to use Azureus through the proxy, contact the server administrator for assistance.
