1
Write a basic script. It doesn't need to be detailed. You can leave a lot of the dialogue to your actors, so long as you have the general storyline down for them to learn. If you can't write a script, you'll need to find someone who can. Even if you aren't a good writer, you may be able to get a few ideas and construct a simple story. If possible, get input from friends who may be mystery fans. It will be important to plant enough clues to allow your guests to solve the mystery.

2
Find a location to host the event. It could be in your house, a church basement or even a school auditorium. If you want to charge money for the event, you could dedicate a portion of the profits to the church or school. Any location will do but take into account the number of guests and the size of the room you'll need to effectively put on your murder mystery show.

3
Plan a light dinner menu. Dinner is a bonus. The star of the show is the mystery itself. Chicken dinners, soup and sandwiches or even barbecue are good ideas for a dinner menu. Dinner should last half an hour to forty-five minutes. Allow between an hour and two hours for the mystery portion of the show itself.

4
Gather props for your event. It isn't necessary to have costumes but the more realistic the event, the better your guests will enjoy the show. Try to write your mystery around items you may already have on hand.
-
5
Hire an ample number of actors and actresses to fulfill the requirements of your show. If possible, use family and friends who will do your show for fun rather than money. This will help cut costs. Allow for at least a full day of rehearsals with your entire cast before the event.
