Instructions

    • 1

The most important part of playing defense on the John Madden football games, is understanding which defenses are good against the pass, and which are best against the run.

    • 2

The base defense for all teams on Madden is either a 4-3 or a 3-4. This will give you 4 defensive linemen, and 3 linebackers (or vice versa) along with your 4 secondary players. This is usually a good defense to use against someone that knows what they're doing on offense. This will give you your best defense against the run, but usually man to man defense against the pass.

    • 3

Now if you know your opponent is one that favors the pass (usually plays as Indianapolis, New Orleans, New England, etc) you want to use the dime or quarter defense. The dime gives you a chance to stop the pass from sideline to sideline. The quarter defense gives you coverage against the big plays down-field, however is most susceptible against the run.

    • 4

The nickel defense gives you the extra secondary defender, and is good against the run and pass.

    • 5

The most important part of playing defense on Madden, is knowing when and how to blitz your opponent. This will give you a great chance to rush the opponent's quarterback and hurry them into making mistakes. You will want to blitz more than the teams do when you watch football on television. If you get to a 3rd and long situation on defense with your opponent backed up deep on their side of the field, BLITZ and blitz aggressively.

Tips & Warnings

  • Mix your blitz packages to confuse your opponent.

  • Play quarter only if you are positive your opponent will not be running.

  • Over blitzing can leave your defense vulnerable against the screen pass and the draw handoff.
