If you delete the wrong thing you could have to reinstall your operating system to use your computer. The last thing to do is to clean your registry if all you want to do is speed up your computer try other things such as disk cleanup, defragment your computer, install spyware, use an external hard drive, or move unneeded items to an external hard drive.

To access you registry on vista go to START, then type "regedit" and press the enter button. Click the continue button. For XP and lower click Start, Run and then type "regedit". You should have the registry editor on your screen.

To backup your registry find a blank CD or an external hard drive to store the data of your registry click file at the top of the window, then click export, then at the bottom of the window click "all" and not just select branch, find where you are planning to store your backup registry and put a name to store it under that you will remember it as.

There are items on the left side called keys these are the primaries and if you click the arrows you will get the subkeys these are not any less important then the keys they store all the particulars of what is being ran. Find stuff that you no longer have or you don't use and delete it just remember to be careful of what you delete and to backup before you start.
