How to Search for Home Sale Records

It used to be that the best way to search for home sale records was to travel to a county assessor's office and request a property record search. Today, there are other, easier ways to check home sale records without leaving your house, from running searches through online county assessors' offices to looking up information on real estate websites.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to the county assessor's office for the county where the house sale took place, and request property records by owner's name or address. Although most assessors' offices have websites with online search capabilities, some still do not. To find the location of a county assessor's office, enter the state, county and word "assessor" in your Internet browser (for example, "Colorado Denver county assessor" without the quotation marks).

    • 2

Search the county assessor website (for the county where the property is located). To look up the website address, enter the state, county and word "assessor" in your Internet browser (see example in step 1). Each assessor's website has its own search procedures, with instructions to guide you in your record search.

    • 3

Search national home sale listings and records at websites such as Realtor.com (realtor.com), Trulia (trulia.com) and Zillow (zillow.com). These real estate websites let you search for home sale records by address, city, zip code and other identifying information. They also offer other specialized searches such as neighborhood market values, recent and past home sale listings, sale price ranges, and so on.
