Whether you have been selling on eBay for a while or are just getting started, one of the most important steps in operating a successful business is getting organized. If you sell various kinds of merchandise the task might seem a bit daunting, but once you know a few things to do, getting your eBay business organized won't be all that hard.

Designate one area in your house to run your eBay business. A spare bedroom, basement or even the garage (if heated and cooled) can make excellent work areas. If space is an issue, you may find it works best to use one room for listing, taking photos and shipping, then store the items in the basement or garage after they are listed into your store.
Decide how you will store your merchandise. Use storage totes for smaller items to keep them safe and free from dust. If you prefer to have items out in view where you can easily locate them, plastic storage shelves bought at a home improvement store can easily be assembled. Some shelves can accommodate up to 150 pounds each (check manufacturer's details for specifications).
Create an inventory sheet. Whether you choose to use a spreadsheet or keep an inventory form in a notebook, your inventory sheet should include information about what you paid for the item, a description of the article, the price you are asking for the item, where it is located and the actual amount for which it sold.
Number your totes and shelves. Write numbers on the tote boxes with a black marking pen. Put the tote number on your inventory sheet when you store the item. If you are using totes and shelves, you may prefer giving numbers to the tote boxes and assigning a letter of the alphabet to each shelf.
Take a physical inventory. Once you have created your inventory sheet, go through the items that you already have and write down the information for each.
Print a list of all items you are currently selling on eBay. If you have been selling on eBay for a while and have a lot of articles, but want them to be easier to manage, create and print a listing of the items you presently have for sale. Check off each item on the list after you have located it and note where it is stored to ease retrieval when it sells.
Tips & Warnings
- Some people prefer not to write on their storage totes in case they need to use them for something else. An index card taped securely to the tote or shelf can make it easier to reuse if they are no longer needed for your eBay business.
