How to Make Your Own Printable Sign
Having signs made at printing companies can get extremely expensive, especially when the signs may be used for only a short time. With a computer and your imagination, regardless of your computer prowess, you can make the signs you need to sell a product, promote an event, or endorse an idea. Supplies needed are minimal; just the paper of your choice and a good printer.

1
Open Microsoft Word on your computer. If necessary, click File>New and choose a blank sheet.
-
2
Decide if you want your sign to be portrait (vertical) or landscape (horizontal). To change it, click File> Page Setup, and under "Orientation," choose your preference.
-
-
3
Word your sign carefully. People will not spend time reading anything on it unless they are enticed from the beginning. Tell the consumer what is in it for them at first glance.
-
4
Type the words for your sign and format them so that the sign can be read at a glance. Highlight the words and choose Format>Font. Choose the font type, size, color, and add any effects that you want. The size should be large enough for people to read.
Another formatting option is to use the Drawing toolbar. Click View>Toolbars>Drawing. Click the "A" on the toolbar to insert WordArt. Choose the style in the WordArt Gallery, type your words, and adjust them on the page.
-
5
Right-click on the WordArt Image and choose "Format WordArt" to change colors, add fills, thicken the lines, or make whatever changes you deem necessary.
-
6
Add a border to your sign. Click Format>Border and Shading> and click on the "Page Border" tab. Format the border you want and press "OK."
-
7
Insert a background or any pictures that promote your idea or product. Search for pictures that illustrate the point you are trying to make through Clip Art (Insert>Picture>Clip Art) or on the web. Sxc.hu and Clipart.com are sites where you can search for images and save them to your computer. Insert those images by clicking Insert>Picture>From File, and to change your background, click Format>Background.

8
Choose your paper and go to File>Print and press "OK." Card stock works well for signs and so do colors. Printing black words on a colored background can make up for not using a lot of images.
