How to Convert Text to an Audiobook for Mac

Apple's Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard included some new accessibility updates to the core of the operating system that make the system easier to use for those with disabilities. One such feature is the ability to convert any highlighted text to speech. Using this feature, along with iTunes' better handling of audiobook, you can easily convert any text to an audiobook for their your pleasure.

Instructions

    • 1

      Open System Preferences via the Apple menu. Select "Keyboard" to bring up the Keyboard preferences.

      Select the "Keyboard Shortcuts" tab. Highlight "Services" in the left pane. Enable the option "Add to iTunes as a Spoken Track" in the right pane, under the "Text" heading. Exit the preferences.

      Open Mac OS X's default text editor, TextEdit. Start a new document by selecting "File" > "New."

      Copy or type the text you wish to convert into the body of the new document.

      Select "Edit" > "Select All" from the menu bar (or Command+A) to highlight the entirety of the text.

      Right-click (Option-click) the text and select "Add to iTunes as a Spoken Track." ITunes will open automatically and convert the text to speech. It may take a few minutes and the name of the track will be "Text to Speech."

      Locate the "Text to Speech" track in your iTunes library. Right-click the file and select "Get Info."

      Select the "Options" tab. Select "Audiobook" from the Media Kind drop-down menu. Select the "Info" tab to adjust the meta data (Name, Artist, Year, etc.) if you so desire. Select "OK" to close the properties window. The newly converted audiobook will now be in the "Audiobook" section of your iTunes library.
