How to Locate Guitar Strap Buttons

The strap buttons on an acoustic, electric or bass guitar are necessary to put a guitar strap on your instrument. Without a guitar strap, playing while standing up is a tricky task that can result in a dropped and damaged instrument. Finding the strap buttons on a guitar is the first step in putting the strap itself on the guitar. They are very easy to locate, and putting the strap on the guitar is usually just as simple.

Instructions

    • 1

Sit in a chair and hold your guitar as if you are going to play it.

    • 2

Look at the part of the guitar farthest to your right. On the bottom of the instrument is a small, rounded nut. This is the strap button.

    • 3

Look at the part of your guitar nearest your left shoulder. Electric guitars and many acoustic guitars have a strap button here or on the back of the guitar neck.

    • 4

Put the strap on your guitar by sliding the strap buttons through the buttonholes on either end of the strap.

    • 5

Adjust the strap to a comfortable length once it is on the guitar.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you're a left-handed guitarist playing a left-handed guitar, reverse "right" and "left" in these instructions to find the strap buttons on your guitar.

  • Some acoustic guitars do not have an upper strap button. Instead, use a length of thin string or a new shoelace to tie the upper end of the strap around the the headstock, above the nut and beneath the strings.

  • If your guitar lacks strap buttons entirely, you may need to install them yourself. Strap buttons are relatively inexpensive, but if you feel uncomfortable doing the installation consult a professional luthier or guitar tech.
