How to Use Tape for Evening Gowns

Save

Fashion tape can be an effective solution for holding an evening gown or other clothing item in place. It is designed to stick to fabric and skin to prevent the clothing from slipping and revealing too much. Many plunging necklines on dresses worn on the "red carpet" owe their security to fashion tape. It comes in a variety of shapes to fit discreetly under most gowns.

Things You'll Need

  • Fashion tape
  • Evening gown or other clothing
  • Clean and dry the area of skin where the tape will adhere. You can do this fresh out of a shower, or just sponge with a damp washcloth. Be sure your skin is dry before applying the tape.

  • Put on the dress or clothing item.

  • Peel the backing from one side of the double-sided fashion tape.

  • Press the tape to your skin or the item of clothing at the location where you need it to stay put.

  • Remove the second backing once the tape is stuck firmly on one side.

  • Press the tape firmly to your skin or the item of clothing, whichever you didn't choose for the first adhesive side.

  • Check your image in the mirror, and move around a bit. If no body parts you prefer to keep covered are showing, you're all set. Make adjustments as necessary.

Tips & Warnings

  • Fashion tape can be used in a variety of circumstances, in a variety of locations: under a spaghetti strap or bra strap, along a low-cut neckline or back, or where a button gaps. It comes in several shapes to suit these different uses.
  • Stick the adhesive securely to both skin and fabric to avoid revealing more than intended. Don't use tape not intended for skin and fabric---fashion tapes are hypoallergenic and designed for this use. Other tapes may cause skin irritation or damage fabrics.
