Measure the height and width of each wall you plan to paint and note your measurements.

Multiply the height of each wall by its width to calculate square footage. Once you have the square footage of each wall, add the square footage of all the walls to get a total square footage for the room.

Check the product label for the manufacturer's coverage guidelines. A gallon of paint will usually cover between 250 and 350 square feet.

Buy extra paint if your walls are highly textured or porous, as they will absorb more paint. Check the paint manufacturer's guidelines for more information. You're better off buying too much paint than too little, but you may not be able to return excess containers of tinted paint.
