How to Make Monogrammed Button Rings

Button jewelry comes in a variety of shapes, sizes and colors; you can create as many types of button jewelry as there are buttons in the world. If you want to make monogrammed button rings, you only need a few craft store jewelry findings to do it. Make your own monogrammed buttons if you can, or buy them online and then turn them into rings.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a 3-foot strand of 20-gauge wire. Thread it through the loop on your monogrammed button by pulling one end of the wire through the hole in one direction and the other end of the wire in the other direction. Pull until you have a small loop under your button, larger than the size of your finger.

    • 2

Place this loop onto a ring mandrel until you reach the desired size of your ring. If you do not have a ring mandrel, find a dowel rod that measures the same circumference as you want for your ring, and slide the wire onto the dowel rod. You will want the rod or mandrel position to be slightly larger than your finger in order to leave a little extra room; it will tighten as you build the ring.

    • 3

Wrap the right side of the wire around the ring mandrel three times, then wrap the left side of the wire around the base of the button three times. Wrap the right side around the mandrel three more times, and the left side around the button base one more time.

    • 4

Pull the ring off the mandrel and wrap the remaining ends of wire around the band of the ring, one end on either side of the button. Wrap each side three times, and then use your wire cutters to cut off the end and pinch it down with the pliers. Now your ring is ready to wear.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you want to make your own monogrammed buttons, check out girlythingsbows.com for a tutorial on how to use a button cover kit to do it.

  • You can also make these rings using a ring finding instead of wire (available at craft and jewelry supply stores), but if your button is a fabric-covered one it will wiggle against the top of the ring finding. These ring findings are better for making button rings out of flat buttons with holes in the center.
