How to Breed Devon Rex Cats

Devon Rex cats are known for their short, soft curly hair and fun, sweet dispositions. The first Cornish Rex kitten was born in England in the 1950s. In the 1960s, another curly haired cat was found in the same area as the Cornish Rex. The litter produced did not have any curly haired cats, so the breed Devon Rex was developed separately. Their faces are different from the Cornish Rex in that they look angular and pointed.

Instructions

  1. Breeding the Devon Rex

    • 1

Find a Devon Rex breeder where you can buy your Devon Rex cats. The gene for curly fur is recessive, so if you breed two Devon Rex cats you will have Devon Rex kittens. Make sure your male and female are not related. The breeder should have quality papers proving the cats' lineages.

    • 2

Your female Devon Rex will go into heat for the first time fairly young, but it is best not to breed her until she is a year old. You will need to keep the male and female separate until you want to breed them. You also can choose to have only a female and find a stud for your Devon Rex litter.

    • 3

Let the cats mate naturally when the female is in heat and a year old. You should put the cats together to mate once a day for several days to ensure that your female becomes pregnant.

    • 4

When the kittens are born, you are in charge of documenting the kittens' lineage. Register the newborns, and make sure they get their kitten shots and are de-wormed.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure the breeder knows you want breeding-quality kittens. They cost more than pet-quality kittens.
