How to Write a Personal Job Profile

To make a resume or curriculum vitae stand out, some job seekers include a personal job profile. These short statements differentiate you from the crowd and give employers a glimpse into your personality, goals and skills. Your personal job profile encourages employers to get to know you better by calling you in for a job interview.

Instructions

    • 1

Explain who you are in career terms. While you may love gardening and be a parent of two children, your employer is not concerned with those facets of your life. She wants to know that you are a results-driven copywriter, for example. Couple your job title with the best keyword to describe your job capabilities.

    • 2

Indicate your experience level. You may have climbed the corporate ladder over the past 10 years, or just completed your doctorate. Choose the most relevant experience; the rest of your resume will outline the rest.

    • 3

Showcase two or three of your best skills and personality traits. Avoid tired phrases such as being a hard worker or fast learner. Show the employer how you are a perfect fit for the company, by detailing how your personality will benefit the employer.

    • 4

Add a sentence about your personal career objectives. Focus more on the employer's needs rather than your own. For example, you may want to grow alongside a thriving company, helping your coworkers succeed. Employers want to know if your work ethic will be compatible with the existing dynamic within their company.

    • 5

Edit your personal job profile until it is 75 to 100 words long. Add precise adjectives where appropriate and cut anything that sounds cliche or repetitive. Your profile can be up to three sentences long, or you may use bullet points to list your accomplishments if absolutely necessary. The sentences of your personal profile may be written in either first or third person, and you can eliminate personal pronouns to condense your profile further.

    • 6

Add your personal job profile to the top of your resume, immediately below your contact information. Optionally, you could use your personal profile as the opening paragraph of your cover letter.
