How to Convert Component Cable to HDMI

Converting component audio/video cables to HDMI (High Definition Media Interface) requires an electronic adapter to transform the signal into data that is compatible with high-definition devices. An HDMI cable delivers high-definition video and up to eight channels of digital audio that must be adapted into three video signals and two audio signals for component cables. Adapters are available at electronics stores. These devices attach quickly with simple plug-and-play connections.

Instructions

    • 1

Connect the ends of the component A/V cables to the jacks on the adapter using the color-coded plugs. The RGB video cables plug into the red, green and blue jacks on the adapter. The red and white audio cables plug into the red (right) and white (left) audio jacks.

    • 2

Insert the plug on one end of an HDMI cable into the HDMI port on the adapter box with the wider end of the cable turned upward.

    • 3

Connect the DC plug to the power jack on the adapter, then plug the electrical cable into a wall outlet or surge protector.

    • 4

Plug the free ends of the component cables and HDMI cable into compatible electronic devices for transmitting A/V signals.

Tips & Warnings

  • Disconnect the cables from electronic components while hooking up the other ends to the adapter unit.

  • Component to HDMI adapters are expensive. It may cost less, in the long run, to purchase an audio/video component with HDMI connections so a single HDMI cable can be used to connect both devices. Shop around and consider this option before investing several hundred dollars in an adapter.
