How to Repair Electrolux Canister Vacuums

Electrolux vacuum cleaners are useful for cleaning your carpets and hard floor surfaces. The vacuum cleaner works well under most conditions, but occasionally needs repairs. The most common repair is replacement of the belt, which turns the power brush; replacement of the light bulb, which provides extra light on the floor surface when vacuuming; and resetting the circuit breaker, which is tripped when the power nozzle is clogged and does not turn. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

  1. Belt Replacement

    • 1

Unplug the vacuum cleaner and let it sit for several minutes before replacing the belt. The pulleys within the power nozzle can get hot and need time to cool down to prevent injury.

    • 2

Turn the power nozzle over so the bottom of the nozzle is facing up.

    • 3

Remove the four screws in the power nozzle base plate. Note that there are six screws on the bottom of the power nozzle. The four you need to remove are in a line above the brush.

    • 4

Pull the base plate off of the power nozzle and place it to the side. You now have access to the brush and the belt.

    • 5

Grip both ends of the brush and lift it out of the power nozzle. The belt is wrapped around the pulley on the brush and the motor pulley.

    • 6

Slide the belt off of the brush pulley and the motor pulley, if the brush is worn and not broken. If the brush is broken, pull it out of the power nozzle.

    • 7

Wrap the new belt around the motor pulley and slide the other end around the brush pulley.

    • 8

Place the brush back into the power nozzle. You may encounter some resistance as the belt is new and tight. Pull on the brush firmly. Do not yank the brush, as it may damage the brush, the motor pulley or the belt.

    • 9

Spin the brush with your hand to ensure it moves freely. If it does not spin freely, adjust the belt so it is sitting in the middle of the motor and brush pulleys. You may need to pull the brush out of the power nozzle reinsert it.

    • 10

Align the base plate over the power nozzle and reinsert the screws.

    Bulb Replacement

    • 11

Turn the power nozzle over so the bottom is facing up.

    • 12

Remove the four cover screws from the bottom of the power nozzle. Note that the power nozzle has six screws on the bottom. The screws you want to remove are the screws next to the two wheels and the two screws near the outside of the base plate.

    • 13

Flip the power nozzle over so the top is facing up and lift the cover off of the nozzle. You now have access to the light bulb.

    • 14

Grip the light bulb and pull it out of the socket. Dispose of the light bulb in the proper waste receptacle.

    • 15

Insert the replacement light bulb into the socket by pushing on it firmly.

    • 16

Place the cover back on the power nozzle, turn it over so the bottom is facing up and reinstall the screws.

    Resetting Circuit Breaker

    • 17

Turn off the vacuum cleaner and unplug it from the electrical outlet if the brush stops spinning. The brush generally stops running because of an obstruction. This will trip the circuit breaker to prevent damage to the power nozzle.

    • 18

Turn the power nozzle over and clear the obstruction from the brush. If the obstruction is a buildup of hair, string and other debris, you may need to cut it off of the brush with scissors. Be careful not to cut the bristles of the brush as it will reduce the effectiveness of the vacuum cleaner.

    • 19

Press the circuit breaker button on the back of the power nozzle to reset it. This returns electricity to the power nozzle.

    • 20

Plug the vacuum cleaner back into the electrical outlet and resume normal operation.
