How to Make a Walker Basket

If someone you know uses a mobility aid walker, you know how awkward -- and sometimes dangerous -- it can be to carry things while gripping the walker. The Social Planning Council for the North Okanagan's online topic, "Falls Prevention," recommends walker baskets for those who use walkers. Prevent falls by attaching a walker basket to the front of the walker. While you can purchase baskets for walkers, save money by making a homemade walker basket. In just a few steps, you can turn a rectangular woven basket (such as a bread basket) into a convenient walker basket with a cup holder.

Things You'll Need

  • Measuring tape
  • Rectangular woven basket
  • Roll of 1/4-inch ribbon
  • 1/4-inch elastic (10 inches long)
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors
  • A friend

Instructions

  1. Instructions

    • 1

Measure the horizontal bar on the front of the walker.

    • 2

Purchase a rectangular woven basket. Choose a basket that is at least two inches shorter than the bar. Look for a basket that is approximately seven inches deep and five inches across from front to back.

    • 3

Create an elastic loop for a cup holder. Thread one end of the 1/4-inch elastic through a yarn needle. Insert the needle into the top of one corner of the basket. Pull the elastic through to make a loop. Remove the needle and tie a knot in the elastic. Pull the loop through so that it rests inside the basket until use.

    • 4

Have someone hold the basket in front of the walker, directly underneath the bar. Thread the ribbon through the yarn needle.

    • 5

Insert the needle underneath the rim of the back of the basket (against the bar) about four inches from the corner. Make a loop through the basket and over the bar. Knot securely. Cut the ribbon and remove the needle. Repeat, making another loop about four inches from the other back corner.

    • 6

Make two more loops, one on each side of the basket attached to the side bars. The side loops will keep the basket from flapping during walking.

Tips & Warnings

  • For a feminine touch, hot glue a cluster of silk flower heads to the front of the homemade walker basket. For a masculine touch, simply substitute the woven basket with a wire mesh basket.
