1
Turn off the water supply to your bathroom. Put a drop-cloth in the bottom of your tub. Put on your eye protection and knee pads.
-
2
Pry off the tub faucet handle covers, using a small screwdriver. Remove the screw that holds on the handle. Pull off the handle. Remove any trim screws and pull off the trim pieces.

3
Apply the channel lock pliers or use a tub socket wrench to remove each of your stems. The socket wrench fits tight around the stem and will go back into the wall, so each stem can be removed. Turn the wrench counter-clockwise.
-
4
Inspect the bottom of each stem. A stem washer is on the very bottom of the stem. Remove it with the small screwdriver and install a new stem washer. A faulty or worn stem washer is the most common item that can cause a tub faucet to leak.

5
Wrap a couple of turns of Teflon tape onto the threaded bottom of the stem. The teflon tape is to prevent any leaks from the bottom of the stem, located inside the wall. Replace the tub stem by screwing it back into the wall. Use the tub socket wrench to help you line it up with the threads.

6
Re-install your trim by pushing it up against the wall and tightening the set screws. Push the handles over the protruding stem. Install the handle screw and tighten down. Push on the faucet cover. Turn on the water and check for leaks.
