How to Reformat a Floppy Disc

The Windows operating system has a built-in utility that lets you easily reformat a floppy disk. Formatting will recreate the file system on the floppy disk. The standard 3.5-inch floppy disk only supports the FAT file system. Be sure the floppy disk does not contain any important files, because reformatting it will delete everything on it.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert the floppy disk that you want to format in the floppy drive of your computer.

    • 2

From the "Start" menu, click "My Computer."

    • 3

Right-click the "3 1/2 Floppy (A:)" icon in the My Computer window, and then click "Format."

    • 4

Click the "Start" button in the" Format 31/2 Floppy (A:)" dialog box.

    • 5

Click "OK" in the format confirmation dialog box. This will start the format process.
