How to Create a Facebook Avatar

Save

Your Facebook profile picture -- or avatar -- is the image that others see when they view your profile or read your posts and comments on their Timelines. The easiest way to create a cartoon avatar is to use an online website. If you prefer a photo to a cartoon, edit any photo on your computer that meets Facebook's minimum size requirements and upload it.

Use an Online Application

  • Sites such as BitStrips, DoppelMe and FaceYourManga provide free, Web-based graphic tools you can use to create a cartoon avatar for your Facebook profile picture. Simply choose your gender and customize features such as your skin tone, eye color and clothing. After you download the avatar, crop it to a square shape before uploading it to Facebook.

Size It Right

  • If you prefer to show the real you, choose and edit a photo to fit Facebook's recommended dimensions. Your image must be at least 180 by 180 pixels, but for best results, use a slightly larger image. Use your favorite image editor to crop or resize a photo to at least 200 by 200 pixels. Whatever size you choose, it will appear as a square image, so it is best to crop it square before uploading to avoid surprises.

Consider the Implications

  • If you are unsure whether to use a cartoon or photo as your avatar, consider who might view your profile. If you are job hunting or work in a business setting, a photo is a more professional profile choice. The profile photo or avatar and the cover photo on your Facebook Timeline are the only two photos on your Facebook Timeline that must have a privacy setting of "Public."
